An Unforgettable Night of Discovery This group of artists initially planned to capture the night sky over the Ōmārama Clay cliffs in the southern region of the country on a night in October, when they chanced upon the rare phenomenon. Initially believing they would be blessed to get clear skies that evening, but their night turned into “an unforgettable one,” an individual involved remarked. “He was checking his photographs for a galaxy composite and discovered he had photographed scarlet atmospheric flashes,” he explained. “The discovery was astounding – it resulted in joyful noises and numerous expressions in the dark.” Understanding Red Sprites Red sprites are electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere, produced by storm systems. Differing from traditional lightning that shoots towards the earth, red sprites shoot upwards towards the higher altitudes, creating appearances that look like vertical forms, root vegetables or even marine creatures. The first photograph of a such an event was taken – unintentionally – in 1989, by a team at the an educational institution. Momentary and Dreamlike Sightings They are so brief – lasting just a millisecond – that they are infrequently observed to the human sight, but a team member got lucky. “By chance, I was gazing straight toward an occurrence when it happened – just a perfect coincidence viewing the appropriate section of the firmament and I saw a momentary scarlet burst,” he said. Witnessing the occurrences was a goal for the photographer, an acclaimed night scape photographer. “It appears as if you are observing an unreal vision, it feels otherworldly … there is an intense scarlet hue that is there for a split second, so it is fascinating to observe.” Technical and Artistic Mastery Capturing a this phenomenon demands a proficiency with specialized camera skills, as well as an knowledge about scientific principles and artistic vision, the individual stated. “It is a deeply engaging form of imaging that’s extremely satisfying as well.” A different team member remarked it was among the “most extraordinary nights” of his existence. “I could see the Milky Way illuminating above the horizon while these massive crimson strands of light moved above a thunderstorm at a great distance,” he described. A Unique Photographic Achievement To his knowledge, there are no further recordings depicting red sprites and the night sky of the south in a single image. “It represented a unique instance when you know you are seeing an event you are unlikely to ever witness again.”
