2026 is Poised to Be Dubbed the Age of the Amphibian Adventure.

Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was undoubtedly entertaining, my biggest takeaway was not the intended one: I am convinced that 2026 will be the unrivaled era for frogs in video games.

No fewer than five of the featured titles—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these amphibious creatures. Given that a gathering of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim.

The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians

Frogs are not at all new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the beloved froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have long held a special place. However, their prevalence has seemingly exploded in recent times.

A quick search for "frog game" on Steam yields an staggering number of results. Granted, some of these are novelty titles, a significant portion are serious amphibian adventures.

A Data-Driven Dive

To quantify this rise, I undertook a deep dive into the recent history of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My methodology was somewhat arbitrary, prioritizing games with frogs in the title or prominently displayed in screenshots.

The data tell a compelling story: a marked uptick from less than 20 titles in 2020 to nearly 60 in 2025.

This dramatic growth prompts the question: what's driving this craze? The creature's rising status in the public consciousness is partially evident elsewhere, for example the resurgence of Frog and Toad as Gen Z icons. However, the wave in gaming looks particularly strong.

The Allure of Amphibian Mechanics

In my opinion, this is a shift I can wholeheartedly support. Frogs possess natural creative potential for game developers.

  • Unique Characters: They are perfectly suited to be designed as endearing characters that tend to be a highlight in any game.
  • Dynamic Mechanics: Their stretchy limbs and grappling abilities facilitate a wide array of creative gameplay ideas.

Many of the featured titles smartly employ these traits. For instance the tongue-based traversal in Big Hops and the stretchy arm puzzles of Stretchmancer.

The Leap Into 2026

So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has officially commenced—and the potential for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year yet.

When these games perform well—and traditionally, games from this showcase tend to succeed—we could very well be witnessing a full-blown amphibian entertainment revival.
